Welcome to DivorceRecordsTexas.com.

More and more people are looking for divorce records online and we are dedicated to providing you with the information you need to find divorce records from Texas.

You have a few options to search for the records, they are:

Download Texas Divorce records for each year from 1968 - 2008

From 1968 onwards then all the Divorce Decree and Annulment to Marriage information was sent to the Department of State Health Services to be recorded, but prior to that no system was in place so you would have to contact the District Clerk's office where you believe the divorce took place in order to search for those records.

If you believe the divorce was after 1968 though then you can download the records that the DSHS holds as individual files of 50,000 - 90,000 records, there is one file for each year up to 2008 at the moment. They download in a .txt format which can be opened by most programs, but if you try to open it in Excel 2003 or earlier then it will cut off some lines as that program limits the number of rows to around 65,000 - Excel 2007 allows nearly 20x that amount so that would be perfect.

In each file you get the following information:

File Number
Husband's Name
Husband's Age
Wife's Name
Wife's Age
Number of Children Under 18
Marriage Date
Divorce Date
County Code Where Divorce Occurred
County Name Where Divorce Occurred

Please note that these files are not classed as a legal documents, they just help you to locate where and when a divorce took place, you can then get a verification letter from the DSHS or certified copy of the divorce decree as appropriate.

Get the DSHS to do a search for you

If you want to get a verification letter for a divorce that happened in or after 1968, then you can pay the DSHS to perform a search for you and if they find the record they will send you a verification letter. The cost is $20 and is payable for the time it takes to search, not the letter, so even if they don't find a matching record then you will still have to pay (there is no cost for the letter if a record is found).

You can find out more about that here.

Visit or contact the relevant District Clerk's office for Texas Divorce records prior to 1968

If the divorce happened prior to 1968 then you are going to need to contact the relevant District Clerk's office in the county where the original divorce decree is filed. They can then search their records for you, and provide a certified copy of the divorce decree if you need it. Fees may be charged for searching and providing the certified document.

You can find the contact details of each District Clerk's office here.

Use a public records site

The last option, and probably the easiest one, is to use a professional service like Archives.com which has a huge database of over a billion divorce, marriage, death, cemetery records etc for you to search through. If you are searching for divorce records in Texas because you are researching your family tree then a service like theirs can save you countless hours of downloading files and going from site to site desperately searching through them for information.

There is a fee involved, just like if you get the DSHS to search for a divorce record for you, except this fee gives you up to a whole years access to their entire database and you can just plug in some details and it will do the hard work for you.
